The M42 SPAAG was designed in the 1950s to perform as frontline mobile AAA.  By 1969, however it was rapidly being replaced by the M163 PIVADS and relegated to rear area and reserve units.  Due to its low cost and the multipurpose nature of the 40mm guns, the M42 SPAAG is still in use around the world.
